Wordless Wednesday - Pregnant Barbie?

Would you buy your daughter a pregnant barbie?

What do you think about pregnant Barbie?

OK, I wasn't going to do a Wordless Wednesday until I saw this picture ...

Would you buy your daughter a pregnant Barbie doll?

How about the breastfeeding doll? Think these teach the norm or not?

BTW, here is the link to Barbie Midge Happy Family that sells for $110 to $125 (thanks to Nicole Searfoss for sharing the info this doll) - Pregnant Midge she has a magnetic belly and promotes family. Unfortunately, they took this one out of production in 2002 and replaced with this $69 Barbie Midge Happy Family in 2003 and also Barbie Nikki Happy Family because people complained that it promoted "teen pregnancy". The replacements came with the baby instead of the pregnant mommy doll.

Would you think the same if you saw a child with this doll?

Nope would not. I just think it is too early to start with all the questions that come with this. My daughter is 2 she has Barbies but this Barbie would not make the cut in my house.

I could see myself buying a daughter a pregnant Barbie to help explain things, maybe. Seems like it would be a good learning tool. Same with the breastfeeding doll, if I were going to have another baby and wanted to show what was going to be happening.

New follower from the HOP. Hope you come by and follow. Not too sure where I stand on this topic, though I know I would be worried for the door of questions it would open

I really appreciate all of your comments. @Kristine (the words i breathe) This is a tough one for sure because I remember how fun it was to have children for my Barbie and Ken (I had a baby girl and baby boy to their family set ... do they still sell those?), though they did not come out of the mother's body like this ... I had a lot of fun playing "family" with them, so maybe I would have liked having this one, too. I don't know? Off hand, I agree with @Katie; that the pregnant Barbie could be a teaching tool ... I would not buy this for my child unless it was a toy that she went "crazy" about having (you know how that is ... children come to us with what they want for birthday or Christmas). I might consider in the case that it was important to her that she had that particular Barbie and then after hearing her reason why.

I could see myself buying one. A little story, my daughter had a baby in Aug. She has a little girl 4 and the new baby. Being a military wife, they offer home visits etc. The lady that came to visit them at home actually told my daughter, to give my 4 yr old grand baby a baby doll and let her be a little mommy. Diapers, breastfeeding etc. I thought it was odd at first, but it's supposed to make them feel less threatened by the new baby.

In reality they are seeing you do it.. and might have many wonders that they can't ask. The barbie has a baby in the tummy, just like a mommy... It's not like it's actually teaching where the babies come out of.

Visiting from the hop.. Great first visit :)

@Debbie M. - I appreciate your feedback, Debbie. I don't think that is strange at all; I know from experience that is a difficult age to transition a new baby into the family (well, my older son was 5 and was not too keen on all). So, a family member bought a book called The Stork Didn't Bring You (now they market it for teenagers). I was totally freaked out once we sat to read it and put it up ... it told too much! This doll is a more modest though clarifying choice.

My daughters actually had a 'pregnant' barbie. The baby wasn't in the barbie like this one, but had a magnetic belly that the baby fit in. When the 'belly' was off, it was just a regular barbie. It never brought up any questions, but we've never been secretive on where babies grow or how they come out. 'How it got there' or how a baby got in my tummy has never come up. They loved it...as they love all things 'Mommy'. Just a little perspective from a mom of 4 girls :)

By the way, they stopped selling the one I bought just after I bought it (probably 6 or 7 years ago) because they said it 'encouraged teen pregnancy'. However, the back of the box clearly gave the 'family's history. They told about Ken/Barbie getting married, then having the big brother, then having the new baby. Nothing anti family about it or the packaging like some claimed. You could even buy the whole family as a set. Some read way too into things as far as I'm concerned. Girls like babies....simple as that.

@Nicole Searfoss-Owner, Indulgent Aromas - WOW, that was an interesting tidbit, thank you :) I will have to do a search for that barbie and see if there are any pictures to add to this post!
